How It Works The Swing Away Mail Box Protector works by transmitting the force of the thrown snow into a rotational movement. This allows the force to be dissipated over a longer period of time and keeps your box and the pole it sits on from experiencing the sudden impact caused by wet, heavy snow thrown at high speed. The return spring pulls the box back into position so that the mailman does not have to reach for the box - it returns to its normal position even with heavy impacts.

Installation: If you can set a 4 x 4 post in the ground and drill a couple of holes in your mailbox, you can install this product. All you have to do is set the post level, cut it to height above the ground, attach the Swing Away to the post and the attach your box to the Swing Away. Then you are protected and ready for years of trouble free service! |

Some history about the invention! We lived in Upstate New York for many years. Our first winter there we put in one of those boxes with a plastic pole. It didn’t last long. One really cold day the plow took it out and some of our mail was lost for weeks in the snow! The plastic was too brittle to withstand the impact, I guess. I repaired it as best I could and vowed to make something better in the spring. I built a design similar to the current product—it used 2 springs and was made of wood. It worked very well and lasted for the first winter with no damage. Then the plow actually started hitting the mailbox. See the image above—Without the Impact Protector. This image was taken after the initial hit. I hammered out the dent and was back in business. Soon after this I started to think that the plow driver and I were in a battle. He hit the box several times. Each time I would repair it until finally it could no longer be repaired. Then I came up with the impact protector. From that point on the battle was won. I did lose a couple of springs due to over-stretching from repeated impacts but that was the only damage that was sustained for the remainder of the years we lived there.
